    Disinfection with
    the power of light

Effective for air, surfaces, objects and water

The quality of the air we breathe , the water we drink and the cleanness of surfaces have a profound effect on our health and well-being. We’re all at risk of contracting and spreading viruses and bacteria, especially in busy public areas like the office, factory, store, bar or restaurant, school, museum and on public transport.

UV-C radiation is a known disinfectant for air, surfaces, objects and water that can help mitigate the risk of acquiring an infection and has been used extensively for more than 40 years1. All bacteria and viruses tested to date (many hundreds over the years, including various coronaviruses) respond to UV-C disinfection2. In laboratory testing, our UV-C light sources inactivated 99% of SARS-CoV-2 virus on a surface with an exposure time of 6 seconds3. A clear indication that UV-C can play a valuable part in your protection strategy.

Over the past decades, we’ve developed a strong application expertise. It enables us to offer a broad range of UV-C lamps and luminaires that can be used in a variety of applications. This includes upper air systems that disinfect passing air, open UV-C systems and UV-C trolleys that disinfect rooms and locations overnight (or while not in use), and UV-C chambers that disinfect objects.

    Correct usage

UV-C lighting presents minimum risk when used in the correct way. Direct exposure to UV-C is dangerous. The lighting must always be installed with adequate shields and safeguards (such as presence detection sensors or timers) to avoid light damage and severe injuries to the eyes and skin. The UV-C disinfection luminaires we provide without such safeguards are intended only to be used as components in disinfection systems that contain any safeguards indicated, but not limited to, those specified in mounting instructions and user manuals.

Philips UV-C disinfection luminaires must only be sold by Signify or through qualified partners, and installed by qualified professionals according to our stringent safety and legal requirements.

None of our UV-C lamps are certified or approved as a medical device anywhere in the world, and should not be used as such. They should never be used in applications or activities that may cause and/or lead to death, personal injury and/or damage to the environment. Plants and/or materials that are exposed to higher dosages of UV-C may become damaged and/or discolored.

    3. Data made available to us by the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL) at Boston University, which has been collected from a laboratory experiment conducted by Dr. Anthony Griffiths (Associate Professor of Microbiology at Boston University School of Medicine) and his team at the premises of the NEIDL (such data will be the subject of a forthcoming scientific publication by Boston University), shows that Signify’s UV-C light sources irradiating the surface of a material inoculated with SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes the COVID-19 disease) at a UV-C dose of 5mJ/cm2 (exposure time 6 seconds) resulted in a 99% reduction of the SARS-CoV-2 virus present on that surface. This study determined that a UV-C dose of 22mJ/cm2 results in a reduction of 99.9999% of SARS-CoV-2 virus on that surface (exposure time 25 seconds). Research variables are available upon request.
